In preparations for my "Grampians Brushes" printmaking workshops to be held on the 7th Sept -12th Sept, I produced this "Sleeping Dog" Monotype with water based  "Akua Inks" on Fabriano Rosaspina 220gsm.
Participants in my weekend workshop on the 7th & 8th of September will produce "Monotype" and "Monoprints" as well as  "Dry Point" images. In addition, I hope the combination of the two techniques will produce some great results also.
Places are still available in a variety of workshops www.grampiansbrushes.com.au

Monotypes

A visit to the Halls Gap Zoo gave me inspiration to try some animal images using the Monotype technique. I inked up a plastic sheet and using the photos taken as my reference, I drew freehand in to the wet inked surface with a pencil, cotton bud and I took away background with a tissue.
I then dampened my printing paper, set the press and placed the plastic sheet with its image on the press bed. The Deer and Goat images resulted.
Picture
I printed a Ghost print of the Deer which involves taking a print of the ink residue left after taking the print of the inked plate.

The Rooster (above) is an imaginary image and one of my first attempts.

"Tommy Tucker" (LHS) a Border Collie Kelpie cross never liked his photo taken he would lower his ears and the click of the camera scared him. I will have another attempt at his very missed image.

Drypoint & Monoprint

The use of plastic plates  for Drypoint and Monoprint combinations, as demonstrated here, shows how much easier it is to create & line up your two images.
Firstly I incised the Bower Bird  plate making several proofs along the way to see how the contrasts and line were going to print. It did help to rub a bit of scrap ink into the dry point lines and work over white paper to see the image too. When I was sure of the detail, I then placed my second brown/red ink rolled mono plastic plate over the top of my ink residue drypoint plate of the bird. A light box would be wonderful here but I held it up to the light to see the  image underneath. I then used a cotton bud to rub out the silhouette of my bird, egg etc.
With a soft cloth and cotton buds I removed the ink within the outline to highlight the main features or make  it lighter to create contrast.
I printed the mono print background colour plate first and at this stage I placed an actual feather down.
Over the resulting mono print colour print, feather removed and  while still damp, I placed the inked up Bower Bird Drypoint plate and ran it through the press.
This is one of the first prints. I feel I needed to lighten the birds legs & feet but I was pleased with my initial combination print.

Solar Etching Plate - a great little find

I found this little treasure in a bottom shelf, long forgotten. It was a trial solar plate that had just been exposed and printed in one colour then set aside. The 3 colours have brought it to life. It is a bit worse for wear having a couple of cracks but I was able to get an edition of 8. Using Akua waterbased ink... the rock shade is from my leftover mix of ink, Pthalo blue for the water and gold capturing the last rays of sun on the yellow sand.
The first two prints are especially lovely with the white of the paper showing through on the rock and the birds. Subsequent prints lost this in my frenzy to create an edition although the plate was cleaned and dried  between prints.

Recycled Prints

A rainy day and what I thought was a creative block day turned out a productive one. Some of these cards made from some of my larger imperfect recycled lino cut prints are on their way to help support the World Society for the Protection of Animals.(if accepted) The Printmaking Sisters Robin Ezra & Annie Day have been conducting an International Print Exchange called "Animalia" and all proceeds go to the WSPA. The exhibition of prints will be on Exhibition in Bowral NSW, then Italy next year and America I believe. Check out the fantastic array of animal prints on www.annieday.com.au "Animalia Catalogue" I have sent this set of cards hopefully to be sold to help raise extra funds at the exhibition. The prints would have been used to print test prints on the back & then discarded. This is a much better use and the lino cut fragment prints work well on card format.

The Method...

Picture
Thin MDF board is undercoated before a paste of Poly filler is spread evenly on the board.
Picture
Natural and man made materials are embedded into the paste and just before near set and dry, remove the materials from the paste surface. When fully dry, sand with fine sand paper and seal with a varnish or undercoat.

Use a toothbrush to ink up the first colour into all the recesses.

* Brenda Hartill so generously has produced a reference book and video on this Collagraph Technique.
I was very fortunate to attend a talk by Brenda Hartill at the Bendigo Pottery in 2013 and I saw first hand some of her beautiful prints and her  wonderful Collagraph blocks.

My second print exchange involvement...

Picture

* The Exchange involves creating an edition of 10 prints in any traditional printmaking technique.
* The paper size is to be 12X12cm with the printed image within that size. The works will be displayed in CD cases.
* Of the 10 copies, one print will be donated for exhibition and sale - the proceeds pledged to The World Society for the Protection of Animals-WSPA.
* A second copy will be kept by the organisers for exhibition in various gallery venues.
* The prints will be exhibited initially at the Milk Factory Gallery in Bowral. There is an online exhibition also ...
http://annieday.wix.com/animalia-exchange# or www.annieday.com.au
*The remaining 8 prints will be exchanged with all printmakers in random selection.
* Monday July 1st is the deadline for entries.

I had produced several lino blocks and their printed images in the past featuring parrots, magpies and fish so I decided to use these ideas for this exchange. The print methods I selected were lino cut and collagraph. I have decided on 2 editions to be sent to the exchange...
"The Tiding of Magpies", a lino cut  and "The Moon Fish" a collagraph.

The final Collagraph Print edition which will be noted as a EV edition which means Edition varie. Because of the painterly nature of the inking technique it is difficult for me to gain exactly the same result with every print.

The Printmaker Posada
La Calaca Press is conducting a printmaking exchange, created to promote printmaking and create connections with artist/printmakers around the world.
The print exchange & exhibition in 2013  pays homage to the Centenary of the death of Posada ( a famous South American printmaker.) The theme is "The Day of the Dead" a theme that Posada used throughout his life's work. Printmakers from around the world are asked to create an edition of 15 prints to be sent before Sept 2013. 2 prints will go into exhibitions, one will be archived and the 12 other copies of the edition will go into a collection which will be divided up in a random selection and 12 different prints will be sent to each participant in November/December 2013.

My submission and its development...

Symbolism
The Marigold Flower - represents grief and it is used extensively in The Day of the Dead Ceremonies.
The Butterfly (Mariposas in Spanish) - represents  the soul of the departed returning for their annual visit. It is interesting to note that the annual migration of Monarch Butterflies starts around the Day of the Dead on October 31st. The Butterfy as the symbol of the soul is a very ancient belief.
The Skull - is of course the symbol of death.

Each colour range was added separately to the Lino cut in a run so as not to muddy the colour application. The prints have to be numbered, pressed and packed carefully with acid free tissue between each print and then posted to Carlos Barberena USA. http://calacapress.blogspot.com

"The Moon Bird Returns"
Collagraph,
Mono print and Ghost print techniques.

Akua water based ink
Fabriano Rosapina- Bianco 220gsm paper
The creation of this image has involved several printmaking techniques in my quest to recreate a vision I saw in the half light, in the evening when the Moon bird returned.
The short-tailed shearwater, found on Griffith Island off Port Fairy on the south coast of Victoria, Australia is a rather ordinary looking bird but it has an amazing annual migration. Using the prevailing winds, the shearwater sets off
north on a circular crossing of the vast Pacific Ocean, completing a flight of 15,000 km over several months. From Australia the shearwater flies northward to Japan and Alaska circling around past California, onto New Zealand battling
crosswinds, to return exhausted to the same burrow and on almost the same evening as the rest of the colony. This remarkable bird undertakes this challenging annual journey by instinct and I marvel at the freedom of flight to travel without borders to such distant places.
